When we think about healing, most of us instinctively focus on the physical.

We adjust our diets, balance our hormones, fine-tune our supplements.

We work with what we can measure and see.

But over the past decades, a quieter realisation has been emerging — in both the scientific and holistic communities — that true, lasting healing often reaches deeper than the body alone. Existing research evaluates the effectiveness of family constellation therapy and highlights both supporting evidence and limitations.

Beyond our conscious memories, there exists a web of inherited experiences: the unspoken traumas, unresolved griefs, and hidden loyalties of our ancestors.

These ancestral imprints can profoundly influence not just our emotional wellbeing, but our physical health too.

Yet science is only beginning to catch up with what many indigenous and spiritual traditions have long known intuitively:

In my clinical experience, it is not uncommon to find that beneath the surface of physical issues lie emotional themes that seem oddly disproportionate to the individual’s life story:

  • Deep, unexplainable grief

  • A persistent sense of guilt or responsibility

  • Chronic fear of abandonment or failure

  • Patterns of self-sabotage or invisibility

Often, when explored sensitively, these patterns link back to unresolved experiences in the family system:

A grandmother who lost a child but was never allowed to grieve;

A grandfather displaced by war;

A lineage marked by unspoken shame or loss.

The body, in its profound wisdom, sometimes carries what the heart cannot.

Recognising these inherited dynamics does not negate the need for physical interventions — nutrition, movement, medicine remain vital.

But by addressing both the biological and the emotional inheritance together, the path to true, lasting health becomes far more accessible. Negative emotions within families and groups can be underlying causes of mental health concerns.

Family Constellations: A Pathway to Resolution

One therapeutic approach that directly addresses ancestral patterns is Family Constellations. Constellation work is an experiential therapy method that helps individuals gain insight into family relationships and emotional issues. Family constellations theory uses group representatives to explore family dynamics. The family constellations approach is a technique that reveals hidden family dynamics.

Developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, Family Constellations reveal the hidden dynamics operating within a family system, often across multiple generations. Hellinger's approach provides the theoretical foundation and practical applications for this work.

Rather than working solely through verbal narrative, this method uses a spatial, embodied process:

Representatives — or sometimes objects or figures — are positioned in a space to symbolically represent family members. Group members may represent family or ancestral figures to facilitate insight and healing, and various members may be involved in role play or artistic representation. Stand ins are individuals who temporarily act as family members within sessions. Other members in the group may embody family dynamics and emotional states to help uncover underlying issues. Role play is used to simulate interactions and explore family dynamics.

Through subtle observations of posture, gaze, and emotional resonance, underlying entanglements are brought to light. The constellation process involves group members representing family members to reveal underlying family dynamics and emotional disharmony. A family constellation exercise is a therapeutic intervention designed to explore family dynamics and resolve emotional issues, often involving emotional intensity and the need for preparation and follow-up support.

These entanglements might include:

  • Children carrying emotional burdens that belonged to parents or grandparents

  • Individuals unconsciously replicating the fates of excluded or forgotten family members

  • Chronic illnesses acting as expressions of family loyalty or unresolved grief

The goal is not to analyse or “fix” the past, but to recognise it, honour it, and allow each story its rightful place.

When this happens, a shift often occurs — not only emotionally, but physically.

  • The nervous system softens out of chronic defence

  • Acknowledge the Unspoken: Create private rituals of respect for ancestors, known and unknown. Light a candle, place a flower on a windowsill, or simply offer a silent thank you.

  • Release the Weight: When feeling overwhelmed by emotion, gently ask yourself: Is this truly mine to carry?
